Steelers Lose 5-2 to Wolves in Playdown Round Opener in Selb

The first game of the final playdown round took place this evening in Selb. The Steelers had to do without Jack Doremus. Tom Geischeimer and Dennis Dietmann were also not in the squad. After his suspension, defenseman Cole MacDonald returned to the lineup. In the NETZSCH Arena, the Steelers were loudly supported by around 150 fans from Ellental. Unfortunately, a possible first win was wasted in the first third.

The Wolves came onto the ice with a lot of momentum and moved forward quickly. The Swabians were busy on defense and couldn’t make much of an impact going forward. In the tenth minute of the game, the home team took the lead with a shot into the far corner by Chad Bassen. Just 97 seconds later, Peter Trska scored the double – 0:2 from the Steelers’ perspective. When Ryker Killins went to the penalty box after 15 minutes, Cole MacDonald joined him a minute later due to delay of game. They were able to overcome the double minority, but just as Ryker Killins came back, Mark McNeill’s disc jumped over the line to make it 3-0. It wasn’t until the final minute that the Ellentäler had two good opportunities to score the first goal through Brett Welychka and Ryker Killins, but Michael Bitzer was able to defuse the shots so that they went into the first break with a three-goal score.

The Wolves also had their first chance in the second period, which Olafr Schmidt was able to thwart. But the Steelers got rolling on the first power play. Cole MacDonald scored from the blue line in the 22nd minute to make it 1-3. In another power play shortly afterwards, Alex Preibisch hit the crossbar with his hammer. When Pascal Zerressen sat out due to a delay in the game, Selber came up again. They also had a good phase afterwards, but Olafr Schmidt kept his boys in the game. Two more times a power play was missed, but in the 39th minute it worked with one more man. Brett Welychka welded in the goal to make it 2-3. The Steelers were back in the game.

The Steelers came into the final period with a lot of momentum. But the disc didn’t want to get past the strong Bitzer. In the 43rd minute the score was 4:2 out of nowhere. Rasmus Heljanko was able to deflect a shot from Frank Hördler. The Steelers ran as the game progressed, but at times they made life difficult for themselves and perhaps played too complicated. In any case, there was more to it. Two minutes before the end, Alexander Dück took his goalie off the ice and went all-in. With 18 seconds left, Nick Miglio scored into the empty net to make the final score 5-2.

THANK YOU for the support on site and keeping your fingers crossed at home in front of your screens. Game number 2 will take place next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the EgeTrans Arena – turning it into a cauldron again – this series is not lost and we will get our first win together on Saturday.
