Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam repays part of the wage subsidy after corona support | NOW

The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam will repay part of the wage subsidy it has received from the state through the Temporary Emergency Bridging Measure for Employment (NOW), the museum for modern and contemporary art and design reports to NU.nl on Wednesday.

Partly due to the corona support that the Amsterdam museum has received from the Ministry of Education, Culture & Science (OCW) through the Mondriaan Fund, revenues increased by almost 1.7 million euros.

Employers must report if things happen that could be relevant to a decision to change, withdraw or determine the NOW wage subsidy. The NOW scheme is in the hands of the UWV.

In July it was announced that the Stedelijk Museum, with 157 FTEs of permanent employees and about 10 FTEs of temporary staff in 2019, had received € 841,945 from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science through the Mondriaan Fund, as support for the loss of income it suffered as a result. of the corona crisis. The ministry matched the amount promised to the museum from the municipality of Amsterdam.

“Since the financial support from OCW and the municipality is added to our income, we will repay part of the NOW scheme”, the Stedelijk Museum tells NU.nl about the wage cost subsidy, without stating an exact amount. The museum for modern and contemporary art and design also confirms that it has already received the first term of the corona support through the Mondriaan Fund.

Mondriaan Fund has informed museums about possible repayment

In the explanation on the website about possible corona support to regional museums with more than 100,000 visitors, the Mondriaan Fund warns that allocation via this scheme “will generally lead to a higher turnover, thus a lower turnover decrease and thus less entitlement to compensation on the basis of the NOW “.

It is not known for how many of the 28 museums that received compensation through the Mondriaan Fund their entitlement to compensation through the NOW scheme has been reduced. The total amount of the reimbursement is also unknown.

NOW scheme extended until 2021

The NOW scheme was instituted by the national government in March to compensate entrepreneurs who expect that they will suffer at least 20 percent loss of turnover due to the corona crisis. Up to 90 percent of their labor costs are reimbursed, while they have to pay the full amount to their employees.

The NOW scheme was extended by nine months in August. The maximum wage subsidy will be gradually reduced to 60 percent, while the revenue loss required for subsidy will be increased from 20 percent to 30 percent.
