State of emergency in Egypt ends after four years | Abroad

Al-Sisi became head of state in 2014 after the military seized power following large-scale protests against then-Muslim Brotherhood President Mohamed Morsi. The state of emergency was declared in April 2017 after attacks on Coptic Christians and has been extended every three months in recent years.

Under the 2011 ousted dictator Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptians faced a state of emergency for decades, which gives security forces more power. This means, among other things, that people can be arrested without a court order and suspects can be tried more quickly under special courts.
