State election 2020 – almost 57,000 preferential votes for “Dosko”

The clearness of the election results was also more than reflected in the preference votes: Governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) received almost three and a half times as many preference votes on the state list as ÖVP state party chairman and top candidate Thomas Steiner (see box on the left). Doskozil received the most votes (12,741) in his home district of Oberwart.

Ex-Governor’s Deputy Hans Tschürtz (FPÖ) gave 7,949 voters a preferred vote; 2,865 chose Regina Petrik, the spokeswoman for the Greens. 1,100 voters and LOS spokesman Eduard Posch won 566 preferential votes for LBL frontman Manfred Kölly.

Patrik Fazekas (ÖVP) was responsible for what was probably the most spectacular chase on the national list: the Neutaler, who was originally ranked 18th, managed to jump to second place behind top candidate Thomas Steiner with just over 1,400 preference votes.

Leap forward for Dax and Brandstätter

With 7,722 preferential votes in the Oberwart constituency, Doskozil, the country leader, also performed best on the district election lists. The big surprise in this constituency was “his” country manager, Christian Dax: with 3,380 votes, he moved from eighth to second place. The SPÖ also overtook the first-ranked regional councilor Daniela Winkler in the Neusiedl district on Lake Kilian Brandstätter (see box on the left).

No big surprises at the ÖVP: The first-ranked performers also performed best in the districts in the preferred votes – so also club chairman Christian Sagartz in the Mattersburg district with 1,555 preferred votes. Sagartz is known to be moving to Brussels, with Julia Wagentristl in second place (1,462 preferred votes).
