State aid: Switzerland wants to support Swiss and Co. with billions

In Switzerland, aviation groups also get help from the state. The government apparently wants to invest up to five billion in the industry.

In Switzerland, too, aviation is practically at a standstill. Lufthansa subsidiary Swiss has parked most of its fleet, Helvetic Airways is completely grounded. Airports and ground service providers also suffer. For example, Swissport has already openly asked for help from the state.

Switzerland therefore plans to help the industry. As the Sunday paper reports, the government plans to announce measures to support airlines on Wednesday (April 8). In total, it is apparently about three to five billion francs or the equivalent of 2.8 to 4.7 billion euros.

Probably no state participation

It is not yet known how exactly they will be divided among the different companies. Swiss is apparently most likely to get a loan. When repaying, the report says that interest should be linked to how well the airline is doing. The Swiss state could benefit from this if Swiss recovered soon.

State participation currently seems rather unlikely. According to the report, the reason is, among other things, that state participation is also under discussion in Germany. The bureaucratic effort involved in joining Switzerland at the Lufthansa subsidiary Swiss is too high.
