The funeral of Ilse Uyttersprot, the former mayor of Aalst who was killed by his companion last week, took place on Friday morning in privacy in Moorsel in East Flanders. “Ilse’s loss is irremediable,” said former Prime Minister Yves Leterme (CD &; V), who spoke first.

The funeral began on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. in the parish church of Moorsel in the entity of Aalst where Ilse Uyttersprot was alderman. Only a hundred people were seated in the building because of the health measures linked to the coronavirus. The area surrounding the church was also deserted, but the ceremony was broadcast on YouTube.
Yves Leterme was the first to speak after the priest. “We express our deep respect and sympathy to you on the occasion of the loss of your mother, your daughter,” the former Prime Minister told relatives of the deceased.
“We express our respect and gratitude to a former colleague. On my own behalf and on behalf of colleagues, on behalf of so many people in politics and government across partisan lines who have had the good fortune to know and work with Ilse. The loss of Ilse is irreparable and it touches society deeply. It doesn’t make sense that a mother should bury her daughter and that sons lose their mothers at such a young age. This is why, but above all also for who Ilse was, the compassion in this city and this region and far beyond in our country is so intense. “
The former alderman CD &; V Aalst Bart Van Lysebeth, who worked alongside Ilse Uyttersprot when she was burgomaster, described her as someone “genuine and unique in her political action”. This has not always been the case on the Aalst political scene, underlined Bart Van Lysebeth, who thus referred to the withdrawal of his powers. The current mayor of the town, Christoph D’Haese (N-VA), and the other members of the current majority in Aalst were not invited to the ceremony.
The two sons of the deceased then spoke to talk about their mother. “We know you were proud of us, Mom. You were our first supporter in life, in school or in basketball. None of us know how you were doing but we don’t feel like you missed any important moment in our life. In recent months, you were more often at home due to the coronavirus and we saw that you took advantage of it (…). Now there are only memories of a fantastic mother (…). Goodbye Mom ! “
Ilse Uyttersprot was then buried in Moorsel cemetery.
