Stabbing Incident at Randall’s Island Shelter Raises Concerns Over Security Guard Behavior and Refugees’ Safety

Our reporter Gary Merson, from Univision 41, went to the scene and found that all the applicants were outside, while the authorities were conducting an investigation. After 6:00 in the afternoon, they were able to re-enter.

Although it is not confirmed information, the new case of stabbing on Randall’s Island would have occurred outside the shelter, during a fight.

According to the statements of a witness, it is presumed that the dispute was between security guards and the immigrants, which ended up sending one of them to Harlem Hospital. The victim’s current state of health is still unknown.

“There are many security guards who treat people badly”

A young immigrant agreed to speak with Univision 41, without revealing his identity, and denounced that some security guards who are at the shelter “treat people badly.”

“How can it be that a guard himself is the one who stabs a person, they are supposed to be the ones providing security,” he said.

He also reiterated that many security guards “like to look for trouble” (…) “Here we live in anxiety, it is as if it were a prison,” said the asylum seeker.

Gary Merson asserted that most refugees are frightened by the number of violent incidents that are occurring in the shelters, and they are becoming frequent.

After the murder of Dafren Cañizales, the mayor of New York, Eric Adams, assured that they would reinforce prevention measures in the shelters, with metal detectors and greater police force.
