The broadcast of the trailer forSquad 99, Quebec adaptation of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, unveiled Wednesday by Club Illico, arouses reactions on social networks. One of the main actresses of the series, Melissa Fumero, denounces the fact that there is no actress of Latin origin in the Quebec version, unlike the original version.

Born to Cuban parents, Melissa Fumero has played Inspector Amy Santiago for seven seasons in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, aired on NBC. The American-Argentinian actress Stephanie Beatriz plays the character of Rosa Diaz. In the Quebec adaptation, which will be available on September 17 on Club Illico, these roles are respectively defended by Mylène Mackay and Bianca Gervais.

The actress clarified her words on Friday, stressing that “it is not the actresses’ fault”, but that she questioned the decision of the creators. “If this show is a success, I hope the creators will seize the opportunity to engage BIPOC actors in supporting roles and special participations,” she wrote.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and it basically comes down to this… while I understand the Latina population is v small in Quebec (& how many of them are funny actors?) the Amy n Rosa roles could’ve gone to ANY BIPOC so it’s disappointing to see that missed opportunity.
