Sports clubs and the energy crisis – “Sport will become more expensive”

After the corona crisis comes the energy crisis – which is difficult for sports clubs to absorb. Because many have not even overcome the effects of the corona pandemic. In view of rising energy prices, Frank Fechner, chairman of the Eimsbütteler Turnverband, one of the largest sports clubs in Hamburg, also predicts considerable additional costs for the maintenance of the sports facilities.

In order to relieve the members during the corona pandemic, the contributions have not been increased in recent years. But now you are in a situation where you have to increase the contributions “just because we know that energy cost increases are coming our way.” A fivefold increase in costs must currently be expected. Although you have a certain amount of equity that you hold back for crisis situations, as a non-profit association you are only allowed to build up earmarked reserves, says Fechner.

He also expects permanent increases: “Sport will become more expensive. The non-profit sport in the sports club will also become more expensive.” He therefore hopes that the sport will continue to be valued, because otherwise the offer could not be maintained.

Possible restrictions in winter

In order to save energy, the club also has to be prepared for minor restrictions. For example, saunas were switched on later, and lower temperatures in the sports halls in winter are also conceivable. However, it becomes critical when it comes to the water temperature when children swim. You need around 25 or 26 degrees for that. Otherwise the children couldn’t learn to swim there – after two years of the pandemic without swimming courses, that wouldn’t be a good development, Fechner warns.

Hope for more funding for energetic renovation

With a view to energy-efficient refurbishment, clubs in Germany are already very ambitious, says Fechner. The club’s facilities have already been systematically converted to LED. “I would be very happy if there were attractive funding programs that would allow us to continue such energy-related renovations.”

Again dependent on the solidarity of the members

Fechner is optimistic that, despite price increases, sport will remain important to club members in the future. You noticed how much people missed sport during the Corona period. “Many people have only become aware of the social aspect in the last two years. Many were very solidary with their clubs. ”Unfortunately, this solidarity is now dependent again.
