Sporting Alvalade Stadium Expected to Reach Full Capacity for Monday’s Classic Against FC Porto, Set for Record-Breaking Attendance

Expected to be the best house of the season in the Leonine enclosure, on the way to 50 thousand; Average number of spectators this season at games in Alvalade for the championship is close to 40 thousand; there will be no lack of support for the Amorim team

The 2023/2024 season is being the one that most excites Sporting fans in recent times, at least taking into account the attendances at the José Alvalade Stadium. And for this Monday’s classic with FC Porto (20.15 hours) the biggest house of the season is expected, probably closer to 50 thousand than 40 thousand spectators, with expectations being in the middle, at 45 thousand fans. Stand tickets are sold out, the League is at the top of the table and therefore holders of annual seats must not fail to support the team. Rúben Amorim and his pupils can count on a stadium buzzing with emotion.

Sporting in the fight for the title during the Christmas season, a classic that decides 1st place on the verge of the new year and with that the enthusiasm taking over the Alvalade stands, which this season, in addition to the 12 games it has already hosted , for the championship, League and Portuguese cups and the Europa League, opened its doors to 398,559 spectators, a barrier of 400 thousand to be surpassed this Monday, in the 13th home meeting of the lions.

The game that brought the most spectators to Alvalade took place in Europe, with Atalanta: 42,301 people watched the Italians’ 2-1 victory in situ, a match on a Thursday afternoon, the 5th of October bank holiday. Now, the big match of the 14th round is expected to have an attendance of around 45 thousand spectators, which will increase the average attendance for the current season, which stands at 33,213.

This record, however, rises to almost 37 thousand, more precisely 36,773 spectators, if we only take into account the championship games, in a total of 257,417 people who watched League games in Alvalade. The League Cup and Portuguese Cup matches — Farense (22,801 spectators) and Dumiense (18,367) — contribute to the decrease in value (see table below). In the championship, then, the best attendance came on the 3rd round, with Famalicão, 40,287 spectators, the second game with the most fans this season and one of the two above the 40 thousand threshold.

To find numbers of this caliber it is necessary to go back to 2017/2018 and 2018/2019, when the averages were between 35 thousand and 40 thousand — the 2020/2021 season, which was worth the national title that had eluded the lions since 2002 , was no less enthusiastic but was conditioned by the Covid-19 pandemic, which closed the stadium doors.

This Monday, Alvalade’s doors open at 6:15 pm, two hours before the ball starts rolling. 2500 Porto fans are expected to fill the section reserved for visitors.
