Africa: CAN 2021 – FIFA shuffles CAF plans

The postponement of the competition becomes more and more precise after a decision by the international football authority.

The noose tightens around Can 2021 scheduled from January 9 to February 6, in Cameroon. While the African Football Confederation (Caf) hoped to resume the qualifiers that ended after the second day in November 2019 in September, the Fifa Council decided to “postpone” the international truce in September for the Africa zone, further reducing the chances of seeing the Can 2021 fight over time.

The African Football Confederation (CAF) was counting on a resumption of the CAN qualifiers in September to advance the qualifications blocked because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fifa’s decision concerns Caf and three other confederations (Asia, Concacaf and Oceania), but not Europe (Uefa) or South America (Conmebol). In October and November 2020, the Uefa will even have the right to play additional international matches.

On the other hand, Fifa has announced that the Caf will benefit from seven additional days, in June 2021, to have four playoff days disputed, instead of the two initially planned. This should allow Africa to advance in the qualifications for the 2022 World Cup.

Even in those of the next Can, if it is postponed to January 2022 … A decision that could be made by the executive committee of the Caf which meets on June 30.

The 33rd edition of the African Cup of Nations is scheduled from January 9 to February 6, 2021 in Cameroon.

Fifty-one countries were in the running to be part of the 24 teams that will compete in the Can 2021 final phase. After the preliminary round, the group phase started on November 11, 2019 with 44 teams divided into 11 groups of four teams .

The first two of each group, with the exception of group F where Cameroon is automatically qualified, will take part in the 33rd edition of the tournament.
