Splinter Cell to be adapted as an animated series for Netflix by creator John Wick

According to sources of Variety, the series has been approved by Netflix for the production of two 16-episode seasons, which will primarily target an adult audience.

Ubisoft confirmed the deal was real in a statement sent to Polygon, a US video game site.

The Splinter Cell series is one of the emblematic creations of the Ubisoft Montreal studio, just like Assassin’s Creed. The first title, released in 2002, received critical praise and generated impressive sales.

The game follows the story of Sam Fisher, a former member of the United States Navy SEALs, who is recruited by the National Security Agency (NSA) to work in the mysterious and fictional Third Echelon division. He will use military tactics and a lot of stealth to progress in a multitude of secret missions.

Ubisoft has developed a total of six games around Sam Fisher, the latest being Splinter Cell: Blacklist, produced by Ubisoft Toronto and released in 2013. A series of novels inspired by the series has also emerged.

The possibility of a game-inspired film has been raised a lot in recent years, with Tom Hardy being tipped for the role of Fisher, but the project is currently on ice, according to Variety.

Netflix, Ubisoft, and those representing the screenwriter declined to comment on specific details of the deal surrounding Splinter Cell.

This is not the first time that Ubisoft has adapted its designs for the small or the big screen. In 2016, his Assassin’s Creed series was adapted into a feature film starring Michael Fassbender. The film had enjoyed mixed success, however, as evidenced by its 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator.

The studio is also producing an upcoming series for Apple TV +, titled Mythic Quest, who follows a development team in a video game studio, working on an online role-playing game like World of Warcraft. Even before its premiere, the show was renewed for a second season.
