Spiritual father (102) adventure hero Bob Morane passed away | Art & Literature

Author Henri Vernes, the Belgian creator of the character Bob Morane, passed away on Sunday at the age of 102. Lombard publishers announced this today.

Henri Vernes was born Charles-Henri Dewisme on October 16, 1918 in Ath, in the province of Hainaut. His first book, ‘La porte ouverte’, was published in 1944.

In 1953 he creates Bob Morane. The adventure hero appears for the first time in ‘La vallée infernale’, (translated into Dutch as: ‘The hellish valley’), which is published in a collection of stories for young people. Ultimately, Vernes will write over 200 adventure novels starring Bob Morane.

The series quickly becomes very popular, especially in French-speaking areas. From 1959, the adventures are also adapted into comic strips. A short film follows in 1960 and in 1964 there is also a TV series with 26 episodes. In 1998 Canal+ broadcast an animation series, also consisting of 26 episodes.

In the eighties, Vernes grants his hero a few years of rest. During that period he works on the erotic series ‘DON’, which is published under the pseudonym Jacques Colombo. In 2012, Vernes finally puts an end to the Bob Morane stories and publishes his memoirs.
