SPD condemns Lucha’s rebuilding plans for Stiko – SWR Aktuell

After differences of opinion about the corona vaccination of children and adolescents, BW Health Minister Lucha wanted to rebuild the Stiko. The SPD sharply criticized this after consultations with its chairman.

The SPD parliamentary group in the Stuttgart state parliament has criticized the ideas of Health Minister Manfred Lucha (Greens) to rebuild the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko). The independence of Stiko is a valuable asset, it must be preserved and supported, it says in a declaration that is available to the SWR.

Vaccination recommendations: Lucha dissatisfied with Stiko

Lucha had criticized the voluntary Stiko several times in the past: It tends to initially disapprove of the decisions of the European Medicines Agency (EMA). According to Lucha several times, he would like a Federal Health Office with broad scientific expertise. “I would like closer European integration. There mustn’t be any competing companies. I would, if you ask me, bring that into coalition negotiations after the federal election,” Lucha said in August.

SPD: Stiko did not let himself drift

After an exchange with the chairman of Stiko, the Ulm virologist Thomas Mertens, the SPD praised the commission. She did not allow herself to be driven out of the pressure of politics, which had wanted a much earlier vaccination recommendation for children and adolescents from the age of 12.

At the beginning of August, the health ministers of the federal states decided on corona vaccinations for 12 to 17-year-olds without a corresponding recommendation from Stiko. It was only in mid-August that Stiko updated its vaccination recommendations for children and adolescents aged 12 and over.
