SPAR Austria is the new market leader in the domestic food trade ‹fruit portal

According to Nielsen, SPAR’s market share in April 2020 was a record-breaking 35.6%, significantly higher than the market share of all competitors. However, market leadership is not just on attributable to the increased sales during the shutdown, because in January 2020 SPAR overtook the competition for the first time.

Seen over the period of the first four months of the year, SPAR has a market share of 34.0% and is thus the market leader in domestic food retailing in the first tertial.

The dynamic development of SPAR can be seen above all in the sales growth in April 2020: While SPAR grew by +23%, the entire food trade registered growth of +12.6%. As a result, SPAR was able to increase its market share to a sensational 35.6% in April, thereby taking over market leadership.

SPAR CEO Dr. Gerhard Drexel attributes the success to a bundle of factors: “On the one hand, this has been practicing and enforcing our Austrian, regional and local partner suppliers from industry, trade and agriculture for decades. On the other hand, it is our dedicated commitment to stable prices and attractive price offers for our customers throughout Austria – day after day and week after week. A particularly important component of the success, however, are the hard-working and competent SPAR merchants and the employees in all areas of the company, be it in sales, logistics or administration. This has been particularly evident in the past few weeks. We are extremely proud of them, because they have all contributed to this success. ”
