Spanish Prime Minister Sánchez Declares Corona Emergency Until May 2021 | Abroad

Sánchez said he would ask parliament to agree to an extension of the state of emergency introduced on Sunday for six months. He said travel between regions will be banned under the new state of emergency rules.

The state of emergency empowers regions deciding their own health matters to impose stricter movement restrictions, including curfews.

They can also restrict businesses and limit other activities, such as meeting in groups inside and outside the home. A growing number of regions have appealed to the government to implement the measure to allow them to impose curfews.

Spain imposed one of the toughest lockdowns at the start of the pandemic and then relaxed measures over the summer. But like many other European countries, it has hit a second wave in recent weeks and now has one of the highest rates of infections in Western Europe. The total number of cases rose to 1,046,132 on Friday, as the death toll approaches 35,000.
