Spanish Grand Prix fifth canceled race in MotoGP | NOW

MotoGP also canceled the Spanish Grand Prix on Thursday. This brings the number of postponed races to five.

The race at the Jerez circuit is scheduled to take place on May 3, but the event has been dashed by the corona virus. “We regret to announce that the Spanish Grand Prix has been postponed,” MotoGP writes on its website.

“We are continuously evaluating the situation. Any new date for the race cannot be confirmed until it is clear when we can start racing again. A new calendar will be published as soon as possible.”

Spain has been severely affected by the COVID-19 virus with over 56,000 registered infections and more than 4,000 deaths.

Season may start in mid-May in France

The race in Jerez was to be MotoGP’s opening weekend after four previous races had been postponed. The Grand Prix could not take place in Qatar, Thailand, the United States and Argentina.

The first race still on the program is the French GP on May 17 at the Le Mans circuit. The TT of Assen is on the calendar on June 28.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
