Spanish government passes vote of no confidence / Day

After a two-day debate, only 52 MEPs from the far-right populist party supported the motion of censure. Vox. The remaining 298 deputies voted against, including members of the opposition Conservative People’s Party (PP).

PP leader Pablo Kasado previously announced that 88 members of the PP would vote against the motion of censure because it was pure populism.

“We will vote ‘no’ because we are saying no to the division you are trying to achieve, no to the polarization that you need,” Kasado said in a debate in Parliament, distancing himself from Vox leader Santiago Abaskala.

The vote of no confidence put pressure on the PP, who had to choose between voting against, thus maintaining a distance from the far right, and abstaining, maintaining peace with Vox electorate.

Vox It was founded in 2014 by former PP members and since then the party has gradually deprived voters of PP.

Kasado accused Vox, the third largest party in the Spanish parliament, for rescuing the left government because Vox a strong position will unite the left coalition.

Kasado called PP the only credible alternative, but stressed that it was respected Vox voters who “do not deserve to be used in strategy”, which reduces the chances of conservatives coming to power.

The situation is complicated by PP, which with Vox support is being held in several regions, including Madrid and Andalusia.

On Wednesday, the first day of the debate, Abaskal criticized Sanchez for the government’s response to a pandemic that killed more than 34,000 people and infected more than a million, the most beautiful in the European Union (EU).

“Show me one country that has done worse in this crisis,” Abaskal said to Sanchez.

In Spain, this is the fifth vote of no confidence since the restoration of democracy in 1976.

The last time a motion of censure was discussed in the Spanish Parliament was after the huge corruption scandal in June 2018. At the time, it was proposed by the Socialist Party, which led to the overthrow of the government of PP Prime Minister Marjan Raho.

As a result, Sanchez, who has been leading the left-wing coalition of the Socialists and the far-left Podemos since January, sat in the prime minister’s chair. Both parties control 155 of the 350 seats in parliament.
