Spanish Army Rescues 600 Snowbound Motorists in Northern Spain Amid Heavy Snowfall and Extreme Weather Conditions

NOS Nieuws•vandaag, 00:20

The army was deployed in northern Spain to rescue several hundred motorists who had gotten into trouble due to heavy snow. Zaragoza army units have freed around 600 motorists who were stuck for hours in the snow on the highway between Soria and Ágreda.

Thanks to the deployment of the army, all snowbound cars were able to leave the highway. Some of the motorists are temporarily housed at Matalebreras. The emergency services try to keep important roads free of snow as much as possible, to prevent road sections from icing up and hospitals, for example, from being more difficult to reach.

The heavy snowfall is the result of storm Juan, which leads to a lot of precipitation in large parts of the country. In the north, much of that precipitation has fallen in the form of snow. Many roads are therefore impassable and Zaragoza airport is also temporarily closed. The temperature in the region where the motorists were stuck is around -13 degrees.

It has rained heavily in other parts of Spain. For example, a lot of rain has fallen in Extremadura in the west and Catalonia in the northeast. The weather conditions are expected to be more favorable from tomorrow.
