The Spanish women’s water polo team achieved fifth place in the World League Superfinal on Friday, which takes place in Athens, after defeating the hosts 12-9.
Spain, runner-up in the world in the last edition, suffered to defeat a Greece that did not give its arm to twist until the last quarter.
Miki Oca’s hit first. Clara Espar and Judith Forca signed the first two goals of the Spanish team that closed the first quarter with 2-1 in their favor.
But the Greeks, encouraged by the field factor, tied the match in the second act with a great performance from Eleni Xenaki, who was the best of the Hellenas with three targets and a 75% accuracy.
After a tie 4-4 in the third, the duel had to be said in the final quarter where the effectiveness of the Spanish, spurred on by Maica García, top scorer of the match with 4 goals, was crucial to secure fifth place.
