FLORIDA – This afternoon (Florida time, US), SpaceX will launch a new GPS satellite for US Space Forces in Cape Canaveral, Florida, United States (US). This is part of the Department of Defense’s ongoing efforts to renew the constellationglobal positioning satellite (GPS) is already in orbit. This satellite will replace one of the older GPS satellites currently in the system, or maintain the total number of satellites in space at 31.

Page The Verge reported, KNI is the third GPS satellite model of its kind that was launched into orbit. For SpaceX, this is the second time they have launched a spacecraft for GPS.

Called GPS III SV03, it was part of a satellite block known as GPS III, designed and built by Lockheed Martin. They claim, compared to older GPS, GPS satellite III “has three times better accuracy and up to eight times increased capabilities anti-jamming“.

The spacecraft also features a number of new features. They can broadcast new signals intended to help civilians and commercial users of the satellite, and they can also communicate with other navigation satellites – such as the constellation of European Galileo.

That way, people who use GPS systems can connect with more satellites in space. Plus, the spacecraft can last longer in space than its predecessor.

This mission is the first for SpaceX for the US Space Force, under the newly formed US Space Force and signed by President Donald Trump in December 2019. The Space Force will operate under the Air Force Department, and will oversee all space operations.
