What can you take on board a spaceship? Perhaps the first things that come to mind are space suits, research tools, and food and water supplies. And yet, on board spacecraft, there are many more, often quite surprising, items.

The flight of amateurs into space. Handcuffs on board

How it brings Spider’sWeb, Handcuffs were found aboard the Crew Dragon, which took four amateur astronauts into space as part of the Inspiration4 mission. These are not traditional metal handcuffs, such as those used by the police, but flexible zip-tie clamps that can be used to pacify a person.

They were on board just in case. Should any of the four-person crew members panic and their behavior would endanger the safety of other people, they have the right to immobilize him with armbands and administer sedatives, which are also included in the capsule.

Four historical participants flight has been locked in a tight capsule for several days, and the crew has no way of getting back to Earth quickly. This situation can certainly be stressful, and you never know how amateur astronauts will behave. Anyway, as Spider’sWeb reminds us, there are similar procedures on the International Space Station, which involve neutralizing the aggressor with adhesive tape and sedatives.

Toys also fly into space

Cable ties or adhesive tape are not the only “non-standard” equipment for spacecraft. Other items that regularly fly into space are stuffed animals. In June 2020, for example, a plush dinosaur flew to the International Space Station, and in November, on board the ship Crew Dragon is Baby Yoda – a toy known from the series “The Mandalorian”. There has also been a plush globe on the ISS for several years now.

The stuffed animals are used by astronauts to (symbolically) define the point at which weightlessness begins, because they do not have to be pinned to the walls of the spacecraft. By the way, they are a nice decoration that slightly diversifies the monotonous interior design of the capsule or the space station.

Of course, there was a similar toy in the case of the Inspiration4 flight. As part of this mission, a stuffed puppy flew into space as an indicator of the state of weightlessness. Often, after launch, a replica of the space stuffed toy can be bought later on the Internet, and this is the case this time. Usually also available stocks of toys spread out in the blink of an eye.
