Plant breeding program in space on International Space Station (ISS – International Space Station) has been under development for years. His first success was a red Roman lettuce that was bred in 2014.
NASA: Radish has been grown on the ISS
The radish was joined by green lettuce, Chinese cabbage, lentils and mustard seeds. It would be a strange salad indeed, but only some of the vegetables are intended for consumption. In addition to vegetables, we managed to grow tinned, common radish and spikelets, results from NASA’s space garden sheet. In total, 15 different species of plants have grown in orbit.

Vegetable in space is another NASA research project
Like everything that happens at the ISS, plant breeding serves, of course NASA for research, although it also has a psychological dimension. Possibility to take care of vegetables and eat your own product work has a positive effect on the well-being of astronauts. Mainly, however, the program is to check what plants can be grown in space and how the process works.

Therefore, twenty freshly grown radishes will first go to a cold store, and in a year to Earth. There they will be compared with a control group, the breeding of which will begin on December 15 at the John F. Kennedy Space Center. Scientists are investigating whether space farming affects the nutrients and minerals that will be so important in longer space travel.
Radishes are a great candidate for such a journey, as they grow very quickly and are ready for harvest after 27 days. They are also a good subject of research due to the sensitivity of the tuber during its formation. The effects of carbon dioxide will be investigated on Earth wêgla for radishes and how they obtain and distribute minerals.
