SP and PvdA at the kick-off of municipal elections: ‘Don’t look away, listen’

More affordable housing and better quality of life in the neighbourhoods. These are two spearheads of SP and PvdA in the campaign for the municipal elections on 16 March. The PvdA is placing more emphasis on housing and the SP on the neighbourhoods. With their action points, they say they oppose the policy of the parties that are also represented in the cabinet (VVD, D66, CDA and ChristenUnie).

In Den Bosch, PvdA leader Ploumen called for more affordable housing to be built. According to her, local administrators make wrong choices and too expensive homes are being built. She spoke, among other things, of a ‘gold coast’ in Den Bosch, but “wrong choices are made in many more places”, for example in Amsterdam. The PvdA has a manifest prepared to make more affordable housing available in municipalities.

Ploumen accuses the national government parties of not listening carefully to what people need. She also points to the cutbacks in youth care and the possible closure of the pediatric heart surgery in Groningen. “The plans of the new cabinet will not reduce inequality in society. It really has to be more social and fair,” says Ploumen.

In Heerlen, SP leader Marijnissen said that the national government parties do not see what people really need. The problems in neighborhoods in particular deserve more attention, she says. Politicians are increasingly looking away from this, says Marijnissen. “They talk about the housing crisis, the climate crisis, but for a lot of people in the neighborhood it is always a crisis.” The SP has, among other things, strongly criticized the disappearance of the local police officer.

Marijnissen also reiterated the SP’s concerns about the influx of labor migrants to neighborhoods that do not speak the language and do not integrate. The SP will “continue to mention this problem”, despite criticism from other left-wing parties.

Marijnissen also calls it incomprehensible that Minister Kaag announced yesterday that compensation for the increased energy prices is probably not possible, because subsequent generations will then be charged for it. The SP leader stated that “billions go to polluting companies”.

The SP is participating in fewer municipalities this year than in the elections than in 2018. Then there were 110, now 86. This is partly due to the fact that conflict with youth department Redwith which there are no longer links,
