Southeast Asia could be volatile, US should stay away from physical confrontation with China

WASHINGTON – Singapore’s Minister of Defense (Menhan) Ng Eng Hen said United States of America (USA) should stay away from physical confrontation with China related to Taiwan. He was worried that a miscalculation would cause Southeast Asia and even the rest of the world to be in turmoil.

Defense Minister Ng made the comments after his keynote address on Singapore’s perspectives on the US and China at the 12th Aspen Security Forum in Washington DC on Thursday (4/11/2021).

The forum is an annual foreign policy and security conference involving leaders and key players in the defense community.

Session with Ng moderated by co-chair Aspen Strategy Group Professor Joseph Samuel Nye Jr, who asked if the minister was concerned about how the US was handling the “Taiwan question”.

“Taiwan goes to the heart of the political legitimacy of leaders, parties and that is a red line. I can’t think of a scenario (in) where there is a winner if there is an actual physical confrontation over Taiwan,” Ng said.

“So, I would advise us to stay away from it,” he said, as quoted by Channel News Asia.

Taiwan’s defense minister said in October that military tensions with China were at their worst in 40 years, adding that Beijing would be capable of a “full-scale” invasion by 2025.

China to this day still claims Taiwan as its own territory and is determined to subdue it, even by military force if necessary.
