South Korea: North Korea has launched two ballistic missiles

– North Korea has launched two unidentified ballistic missiles into the East Sea, South Korean defense says.

The defense chief of staff says the rockets, or missiles, were fired from the Tongchang-ri area in North Korea’s Pyongan province. They are expected to launch at 11:13 and 12:05 local time.

– Threatens peace and security

– Our defense has strengthened monitoring and vigilance as we work closely with the United States and maintain a position of full readiness, the South Korean defense says.

The rocket flew about 500 kilometers and reached a maximum altitude of about 550 kilometers, according to Japan’s Defense Ministry.

– It threatens the peace and security of our country, this region and the international community. It is completely unacceptable, says the country’s Deputy Defense Minister Toshiro Ino.

Several months of launches

This comes just days after North Korea announced it had successfully tested an engine for a new weapon system.

According to the news agency Reuters allows North Korea’s new weapon system to launch ballistic missiles with a shorter preparation time. Testing of the new system is said to have taken place on Thursday, overseen by the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un.

In recent months, North Korea has carried out numerous rocket and artillery fires. Several experts believe that the country is seeking to develop and expand its weapons arsenal and thereby increase its influence in future negotiations with other countries.
