South Florida Immigrants Are Upbeat About Joe Biden’s Immigration Bill | Univision 23 Miami WLTV

This Thursday, more information was obtained about the immigration law proposal of the new administration of President Joe Biden, which would benefit millions of immigrants in the United States.

Among those included in this law are the so-called dreamers and immigrants who in the past have been covered by TPS, as long as they meet some requirements, such as having been in the country on January 1, 2021. Those who are in the border or on the way to cross it, would not be included.

“The last four years have been a nightmare for immigrants and their families, and that nightmare ends today,” said New Jersey Democratic Senator Bob Menendez.

Menendez is leading the legislative effort in the Senate, of the project called the United States Citizenship Act 2021.

The law indicates that immigrants will be able to obtain a temporary legal status that will give them the option of obtaining a residence permit or green card five years later.

Among other requirements for people to qualify under this law is that they have no criminal record and that they pay their taxes.

Melisa Taveras, from the Florida Immigrant Coalition, said they are very happy with the news, especially for DACA and TPS recipients, as well as workers in the agricultural sector, who would receive their documentation more quickly.

Taveras added that the proposal has to be approved now by the House of Representatives and the Senate, to be confirmed.

But among the members of these communities optimism already reigns.

Jensy Matute, one of the so-called dreamers, said she was very excited about the new path to citizenship offered by the administration of President Joe Biden.

Sorayda, a Central American beneficiary of TPS says she is full of hope.

However, senators like Rick Scott, from Florida, have already expressed their disagreement with this law, and through a statement said that “Senate Democrats are already promoting a radical immigration agenda of amnesty and open borders. They have stopped the deportations of illegal immigrants and implemented policies that will create a humanitarian crisis at the border once again. “

For the measure to become law, it needs 60 votes in the Senate, which currently has 50 Republican senators and 50 Democratic senators. So the only way for it to pass is for at least 10 Republicans to join the bill.

Pro-immigrant activists have already reached out to senators like Republican Marco Rubio, who they believe would be in favor of the proposal.
