Sony to develop drones – News

Electronics giant Sony announced on Monday that it will develop drones. Under the collective name of Airpeak, the Japanese company wants to produce devices that combine Sony’s knowledge of image technology with artificial intelligence and robotics.

The company posted a short teaser video on YouTube that shows little more than the brand name and a spinning propeller. It is still unclear for which target group the devices are intended. Sony says in a brief press statement on the one hand to support the creativity of creators, in order to contribute to ‘the entertainment industry and other sectors’. At the same time, the Airpeak project promotes the use of drones in environments that were previously troublesome for the flying aircraft, for reasons of safety and / or reliability.

Aibo

Known for its photo and video cameras, Sony was a pioneer in the field of robotics in the late 1990s. For example, robot dog Aibo was released in 1999, of which a successor appeared in 2017. Five years ago, the company also worked on drones under the name Aerosense. However, they had a more industrial character.

Airpeak should be launched in the spring of 2021.
