TOKYO Sony started development of CMOS image sensors in 1996 and in 2000 the Sony IMX001 sensor was officially released. More than 20 years on, Sony now controls 46% of the world’s image sensor market.

One of Sony’s most famous image sensors is the Sony IMX766 which has been adopted by 100 smartphone models. The optical format of this sensor is 1/1.56″ and the size of each pixel is 1.00 microns.

As is known, the larger the sensor and the pixel size, the more light it can capture. And Sony is constantly working on bringing better sensors, even the biggest image sensors.

As reported by Gizchina, Sunday (27/3/2022), reportedly Sony is currently working on and will test the new sensor. This sensor will have a specification of 50 megapixels with 1/1.1 inch optical format.

This is the largest image sensor today. There is a possibility that this is a sensor Sony IMX8XX the long-discussed mystery, which will be paired with Xiaomi, Huawei and Vivo flagship smartphones.

Strategy Analytics has published the results of a global market study of image sensors for smartphone cameras. There is indeed a huge demand in the industry for high-resolution sensors and multi-module camera systems.

So it is not impossible that the image sensor which is predicted to be the largest image sensor will actually be presented. We are waiting for further information in the near future.
