With $ 57 million generated in three days in the United States and Canada, Sonic the movie offered the best launch for a cinematographic adaptation of a video game on this market.
The iconic video game mascot overshadows the performance of Detective Pikachu, who had grabbed the record in May 2019 with revenues of $ 54.3 million for its launch weekend. A good performance given the concerns encountered during production, with this first controversial design of the hedgehog of Sega Paramount version. At the world box office, the balance of power is however reversed with 100 million dollars collected by Sonic, when Detective Pikachu garnered 157.3 million dollars (but with a diffusion in 62 territories against 40 for Sonic the movie).
It remains to be seen whether the film will last long term and catch up with the little electric creature, which ended with $ 436 million in room recipes. In France, Sonic the movie also arrived at the head of the box office : he recorded 126,567 admissions on the day of his exit in France (February 12), just ahead The Forgotten Prince with Omar Sy and its 122,323 entries.
