Son Mieux, Claude, Flemming and Wende are the Ambassadors of Freedom on Liberation Day. They will visit and perform at various liberation festivals on May 5. The festivals attract more than 1 million visitors every year.

“Unfortunately, freedom is not self-evident for everyone. Through my ambassadorship I hope to draw attention to this,” says 20-year-old singer Claude on the radio station. 3FM.

In the run-up to May 5, Claude visits an AZC. Son Mieux talks to a refugee Russian artist and Flemming makes a podcast about his Surinamese roots. Wende focuses on freedom of expression.

This year there are fourteen liberation festivals, one in each province and two additional festivals in Amsterdam and The Hague. It was previously unclear whether the festivals could continue. Last year the festivals were in dire straits due to production costs. These had become much higher due to inflation.

Because the festivals are traditionally free, liberation festivals could not include the costs in the price of a ticket. When the festival in Groningen wanted to charge an entrance fee, it led to criticism and threats. The festival in Utrecht could not take place last year due to costs. The central government has now made extra support available for the festivals.
