“To the violent pressure of corporations, coercive for profit”
Just because no one wants to put resources into leaky archaic systems, so corporations create “violent pressure”?
Sevens ended the cycle 13 years ago, and more or less due to die-hard die-hard users (and some old enterprise systems), MS kept releasing patches until 2020… The (at first despised) automatic browser updates that Chromium first came with, eventually all BFUs got used to . It was a godsend for developers –
gone is the need to invest a significant percentage of time in backward compatibility for archaic leaky browsers, just for the few units of percentage of users who refused to progress. Today, it is enough to aim for compatibility for a maximum of 2-3 years back and no one will say anything.
Why doesn’t anyone complain that Commodore 64 can’t be used productively these days? Legacy systems certainly still have their uses, but they should be isolated. Who wants to use them in “normal operation – connected to the network” – is asking. (In addition, I don’t know where you get the pressure, but I feel that even today WIN 11 PRO can be activated with a WIN 7 Pro retail key)
