Some countries will resume vaccination with AstraZenka. Sweden remains restrained

“We need a few days to analyze the situation and decide how to use AstraZeneka in Sweden,” said Johan Larson of the Swedish Public Health Agency. “We will be clear about its use by next week,” he added.

The Swedes stopped vaccinating AstraZenka with precautionary reasons on Tuesday after one person died in the country after receiving the vaccine. He had blood clots and low platelets.

Microbiologist Karin Tegmark Wisell said before Thursday’s EMA conclusions that the Swedish approach would be more restrained. “We will take as much time as we need to make the right decision with a clear conscience,” she told The Local.

She added that Sweden will probably allow the AstraZenka vaccination again, but it will not be until a week earlier.

Norway will take a similar approach. The Institute of Public Health has announced that it is premature to draw conclusions and that it will issue an opinion at the end of next week. “Vaccination with AstraZenek will remain suspended until we have a complete picture of the situation,” said Camilla Stoltenberg, the institute’s head.

Other countries will start vaccinating again

Italy, Cyprus, Lithuania and Latvia, on the other hand, will take a different approach. Vaccination with AstraZenka will be resumed in these countries from Friday. The same step is planned by the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the city of Düsseldorf. Spain will start vaccinating again on Wednesday.

Jean Castex and Boris Johnson, the prime ministers of France and Britain, will be vaccinated with the AstraZeneka vaccine on Friday.

Vaccination with the AstraZeneka vaccine has been suspended in recent days by about half of the countries of the European Union. They were waiting for EMA opinions. The Czechia is one of the countries that has not stopped using the vaccine. The EMA said on Thursday afternoon that AstraZeneka was safe and that its use did not increase the risk of blood clots.
