Sofía Sanchez: The New Face of Barbie Breaking Down Stigma Around Down Syndrome

Many celebrities who participated in the Barbie Movie interpreted different facets of the doll, but Sofía Sanchez was the one who gave a new face to Barbie to send the message of not fearing Down Syndrome.

At 14 years old, Sofía has managed to be the face of one of the most famous dolls, but this means much more than fame, as it is also a great step to eliminate the stigma around this genetic disorder.

A Barbie with down syndrome marks a before and after for boys and girls around the world who can now identify and feel more confident about themselves, something Sofia has fought for during her childhood.

Along with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, Sofía Sánchez walked the red carpet at the Barbie premiere in Los Angeles, California, wearing the look of the first Mattel doll with Down Syndrome.

Made by hand, the shapes and colors on her dress have great meaning, as the blue and yellow colors and the butterflies “are symbols and colors associated with Down syndrome awareness,” Mattel explained.

The company also highlighted the accessories that the young woman was wearing, such as the “pink pendant necklace with three chevrons facing up, representing the three copies of chromosome 21, which is the genetic material that causes the characteristics associated with Down Syndrome.”

Who is Sofia Sanchez?

Sofía Sánchez is the adoptive daughter of Jennifer, a Ukrainian woman who married Héctor Sánchez, a Mexican who went to the United States to attend school and obtained citizenship.

Since she was a child, Sánchez has shown that she is not afraid of her condition, because that does not make her less capable, nor less beautiful. On her social networks, you only see positive comments about her life: “I can do whatever I want” and “I’m smart.”

She also went viral for a video in which her message was: “Down syndrome is not scary”, with which she began her work as an activist defending the rights of people with this syndrome.

Since his father is Mexican, he constantly visits his family in Mexico City where he enjoys food.

“She is a lover of Mexican food. She likes enchiladas, tacos, chips with salsa, guacamole. She is her favorite part of Mexico,” Jennifer Sánchez said in a 2016 interview.

She is currently a model and actress who has several projects on the horizon, such as her participation in the prequel to The Hunger Games, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
