Social rate natural gas half higher year on year, electricity +37 percent | Economy

The high energy prices are also reflected in the social tariffs. In the fourth quarter – so from October to December – these are on average 8 percent higher for electricity than in the third quarter and even 11 percent for natural gas, the federal energy regulator Creg has announced. In one year, social tariffs even rose by 37 percent for electricity and by 50 percent for natural gas.

The social rate is a reduced rate for certain categories of persons or households, such as people with a living wage. As a result of the corona crisis, the social rate was expanded, so that an estimated one million families can use it until the end of this year. In response to the high energy prices, there were already voices to extend the extension of the social tariff.

But the social rates themselves are not immune to price increases either. The Creg sets the amounts every three months. This leads to an average increase of 8 percent for electricity and 11 percent for natural gas for the last three months of the year, compared to the third quarter.

The increases compared to the third quarter are not minor, but the Creg points out that they are capped. Without these caps, tariff increases would have averaged 21 percent for electricity and 64 percent for natural gas.

Despite the caps, the annual increase in social rates is even more striking. The amounts for the fourth quarter for electricity are 37 percent higher than in the last quarter of 2020, for natural gas that is even half.
