Social issues and the economy on the menu of the Council of Ministers in Togo

The Togolese government discussed the implementation of universal health insurance this Wednesday, August 25, 2021. The subject was part of the social points discussed by the government; in addition to economic subjects.

The social

Universal health insurance in Togo. The subject has been on the government’s table for several years now. The National Health Insurance Institute (INAM) was created for this purpose. On August 25, 2021, the government set about examining the draft law establishing universal health insurance in Togo. It will therefore be a question of extending health insurance coverage to the entire Togolese population. The approach requires the pooling of risks and solidarity in the financing. Once completed, universal health insurance will allow all populations to have better access to the health care system.

Pending the implementation of this insurance, targeted actions are being carried out to guarantee better health conditions for the populations. Pregnant women and newborns are beneficiaries. The Council of Ministers adopted on Wednesday a national support program for pregnant women and newborns. Called “WEZOU” – that is to say “life” in Kabye – this program aims to reduce the maternal and neonatal mortality rate in Togo. “This program gradually integrates all the care services for pregnant women from the confirmation of pregnancy until the 42nd day after childbirth”, explains the government.

Economy

In constant search of a better business environment, Togo has adopted a charter for very small, small and medium-sized enterprises (VSEs). Approval of this charter should provide these companies with an incentive and coherent overall environment. It provides efficient direct support and a financing offer adapted to small and medium-sized enterprises.

According to the government, small and medium-sized enterprises “today constitute the basis of the economic fabric of Togo and participate significantly in economic growth, job creation, promotion of innovation, regional and local development and development. strengthening social cohesion ”.
