Freiburg (AP) – Bundesliga soccer club SC Freiburg surprisingly loses its central midfielder Baptiste Santamaria after just one year. The Frenchman is moving to Ligue 1 club Stade Rennes, the club announced on Tuesday. The Freiburgers did not provide any information about the amount of the transfer fee. The 26-year-old came to Freiburg from the French club SCO Angers in the summer of 2020, and with a transfer fee of around ten million euros, he became a record purchase for the southern Baden club.
“Baptiste approached us at relatively short notice with the wish to be able to move back to the French homeland with his family,” said SC sports director Jochen Saier. “After a difficult overall assessment, we decided to make the transfer possible on the basis of his personal situation and the right financial framework.”
The sports club is already looking for a replacement and is “in final talks” with a possible new addition, said Saier. It was clear to the club that they would only agree to the departure of Santamaria if the position in the central midfield could be replaced equally.
