Freiburg (dpa) – For Christian Streich, the matter is clear: In this form, RB Leipzig will deliver a highly exciting title race to FC Bayern Munich until the end. “The way you are performing at the moment, you are a serious competitor to Bayern Munich, there is no question about that,” said the SC Freiburg coach after the 3-0 defeat against Leipzig on Saturday. Shortly before that, the 55-year-old had to learn the force and ease with which the Saxons are currently chasing through the Bundesliga.
Christopher Nkunku (41st minute), Alexander Sörloth (64th) and Emil Forsberg (79th) scored the sixth Leipzig league win in a row with their goals. In the meantime, RB even took the lead in the standings, but FC Bayern Munich countered in the top game against Borussia Dortmund with a 4-2 win and restored the two-point lead. During the game, the people of Leipzig should sit on the plane back home.
“In the end, I think we deserved to win. Even if it was a question of patience, especially in the first half,” said RB coach Julian Nagelsmann. “I’m very happy that we won. We haven’t won that often here. That’s why we’re happy.” In fact, RB had previously lost their last three away games in Freiburg.
This time Freiburg didn’t even have a chance to score. The SC was extremely low right from the start and defended almost every guest attack with the entire team. As a result, RB had the ball almost permanently, but did not find any solutions against the host’s bulwark. SC coach Christian Streich was satisfied with it for a long time. “Resistance, resistance”, Streich repeatedly demanded of his players.
But the first Freiburg mistake broke the resistance. Shortly before the break, goalkeeper Florian Müller opened the game flat through the middle, where Baptiste Santamaria was immediately disturbed by Leipzig’s Kevin Kampl after the risky pass. As a result, the ball jumped to Yussuf Poulsen, who only had to cross over to Nkunku. This hit the empty gate.
The hosts delivered a harmless performance over long stretches. Instead of forcing the attack on the European Cup places, the SC only became a little braver after the goal. Ultimately, however, the sports club was only able to look forward to the 273rd Bundesliga appearance by outside lane player Jonathan Schmid. As a result, the 30-year-old is now French record player in the league together with Franck Ribéry.
As with almost all Freiburg players, there wasn’t much to see from Schmid either. Instead, the story from the first half was repeated: Leipzig took advantage of another mistake by the hosts. This time Nicolas Höfler couldn’t handle the ball properly in the center, again the strong Kampl intervened. The ball landed at Sörloth via two fast stations, and it pushed in flat. Kampl also started the 3-0 win with a pass to the Norwegian, who this time went to the back of the substitute Forsberg. The Swede circled the ball in the bottom right into the net.
