Snow Clearing Operations in Thionville: Trucks, Quads, and Elbow Grease

At the slightest weather alert, they are ready to draw out salt spreaders, blades, snow plows, salt and brine! In the town of Thionville, 50 municipal agents are volunteers to carry out on-call duty and rounds, aboard their four trucks (six in case of hard times) and even their quads, to crisscross the town.

Trucks, quads, and elbow grease

The salt spreaders’ tour begins with the priority axes of the city and the eight villages of the commune (Veymerange, Elange, Oetrange, Volkrange, Beuvange, Metzange, Garche and Koeking), then the secondary roads, such as small streets, dead ends and housing estates. But the city services have several types of vehicles to clear snow everywhere: “The trucks, loaded with salt the day before, are ready to leave in the morning. For the pedestrian center, we have had quads for three years, equipped with blades and salt spillway like the trucks“, specifies Xavier Chaput, the deputy general director of technical services at Thionville town hall and responsible for winter viability. “There are still 20,000 m2 in the pedestrian center. The quads can therefore easily access anywhere, at any time, and make businesses accessible“, specifies Patrick Thony, the general director of technical services for the city. Pedestrian agents complete the system to manually salt pedestrian crossings and the surroundings of public buildings.

Salt, brine, and calcium chloride

Different machines therefore, and also different products used to melt snow or ice, also used differently depending on the coverings. “Salt is sodium chloride, which works very well on snow and ice. But below -7 degrees, it no longer acts as effectively. We then use calcium chloride“, explains Xavier Chaput. If the road is icy and dry, the salt will remain in crystal form and will not melt the ice. We then use brine, or even salt slurry (brine + salt) which will be more effective. Conversely, if the roadway is icy but very wet, the brine will be ineffective because the salt is too diluted, we will then favor salt in the form of crystals. “It all depends on each situation. It is our patrolman, who roams the streets at night, who decides on the solution to spread“. The city permanently has a stock of 600 tonnes of saltwhich comes from the mines of Varangéville, south of Nancy.

Active participation of residents

To perfect the device, around fifty salt bins are distributed throughout the city, so that residents can clear the public roads in front of their homes. “This is not useful for clearing snow from your garage doorway!“, warns the city. citizens must clear the sidewalks of snow themselves in front of their home, with their own means. “If a person is unable to do so themselves, because they are too old for example, they can contact the municipal social action center, and we will do what is necessary.“, indicates Brigitte Schneider, the deputy mayor of Thionville in charge of the work.

And if everyone equips themselves with snow tires, adapts its speed, and does not overtake the salt spreadersincluding in town, everything should go well!
