On Friday, the Meteorological Institute sent out an orange and yellow danger warning for snow for large parts of Southern Norway and Eastern Norway.
On Saturday morning, the meteorologists will update the hazard warning.
Certain areas in the southeast can now expect up to one meter of snow.
– There is quite a lot of snow, yes. So then it’s just a matter of finding the snow cover for large parts of Southern and Eastern Norway in the last part of the New Year’s weekend, said on-duty meteorologist Martin Granerød on Friday.

Can cause major traffic challenges
In particular, it will be east of Lindesnes in Agder and all the way up the coast to southern Vestfold.
The criterion for an orange snow warning is that there is “very much snow”.
The warning applies from 11 a.m. on New Year’s Eve until dawn on January 2.
– It’s going to be quite a long snowstorm here.
“In a smaller area, an extremely large amount of snow can fall, 50-100 cm”, writes the Meteorological Institute in the danger warning.
Kristiansand can risk up to 65 millimeters of rainfall. With well over half a meter of snow, it can mean major traffic challenges, both for vegans and for air traffic.
Snøfokk in the mountains – challenging driving conditions
Granerød indicates that the weather will probably affect New Year’s traffic.
– For those going up the mountain, it can be challenging for vegans when they go down again on Monday.
At the same time as the orange danger warning, a yellow danger warning applies to a larger area. For those areas, between 10 and 25 cm of snow is expected during the period.
– And there is enough snow to plow through, considering the weekend we are now in. Many are probably at their cabins and will be going home again during the weekend, so you have to be prepared for challenging driving conditions towards the end of the weekend.
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has also issued a yellow warning for snow drifts in the mountains between East Norway and West Norway. The notice applies for the same period.
Combined with the snowy weather, it can also create challenges on the mountain passes. Here, there may be queues or road closures at short notice.

After the snow comes the Siberian cold
The reason for the heavy snow is a low pressure that comes in from the North Sea and over the Skagerak.
– The low pressure set up a wind field from east to north-east, and this dragged a lot of cold and moist air into large parts of the eastern mountains.
After the worst of the snowy weather is over, it will be a cold start to the new year. Cold air comes all the way from Siberia, first over northern Norway, then to southern Norway.
It doesn’t get quite as cold as in Siberia, where the minus degrees can creep below 50.
Temperatures down to 30 and 40 degrees below zero have been forecast on the Finnmarksvidda and for inland areas of southern Norway.
On the coast and in the far south of the country, it can be minus 10 degrees.

The cold can last for several weeks.
In the Stratosphere it is usually very cold at this time of year, but over the next few days the temperature there will rise by approximately 70 degrees, writes the Meteorological Institute at X.
The phenomenon is known as “abrupt stratospheric warming” and can lead to a long cold period in January.
Western Norway does not get the huge amounts of snow or the coldest temperatures.
– It’s raining a bit today, but from tomorrow onwards it will be cloudy. It will also gradually get cooler over the next week.
But even if both the coast and inland areas of Western Norway can experience minus degrees, it will probably not be similar to the temperatures that have been forecast in the east of the country.
The area from Trøndelag and northwards will also receive sheltered weather.
The meteorologist also reminds that it is a good idea to check the wind conditions if you are going to set off fireworks on New Year’s Eve.
