SMEs: 48 abuse proceedings are ongoing because of Covid credit

136,000 companies have obtained Covid-19 loans secured by the federal government to secure their liquidity. That is around every fifth SME in Switzerland. Around 16.8 billion Swiss francs were paid out. In 845 cases there were investigations into suspected abuse.

According to the online overview of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco), which was last updated on Thursday and reported by various media, around 42 percent of the funds made available were used. In total, loans totaling 16.8 billion Swiss francs were granted to 136,112 SMEs.

In 845 cases there were investigations into suspected abuse of the loans. However, proceedings have so far only been initiated in 48 cases because the suspicion was confirmed.

In 167 cases, the banks made use of the federal guarantee. The corresponding losses so far amounted to around CHF 13.7 million. 123 banks took part in the Covid-19 program.

The deadline for submitting applications was July 31st. The deadline for applications for guarantees for startups runs until the end of August. In total, the federal government made a maximum of 40 billion francs available for the loan program.
