Smartphones are not ready for Ray Tracing, says Nvidia CEO

Jensen Huang opposes actions by AMD, which works on a Samsung chip with RT support

O CEO yes Nvidia, Jensen Huang, declared that smartphones are not ready to support the technology of Ray Tracing In real time. This statement contradicts the actions of the AMD, which is working together with Samsung to launch a chip that supports Ray Tracing In real time.

According to the executive director of Nvidia, the company has no plans to bring architectures compatible with Ray Tracing for cell phones or mobile devices. He still argues that the time for technology in mobile devices is yet to come, but it’s not now.

“Ray tracing games are pretty big, to be honest. The dataset is pretty big, and there’s going to be a time for that. [a criação de um chip com ray tracing nos celulares]”.

After all, AMD licensed its architecture RDNA2 to the Samsung, with its use confirmed on the chipset GPU Exynos 2200. More than that, Lisa Su confirmed that the South Korean manufacturer’s SoC will indeed support Ray Tracing in real time.

“The next place you’ll find the RDNA2 will be in the high-performance handset market. AMD has partnered with industry leader Samsung to accelerate graphics innovation in the mobile market, and we’re happy to announce that we’re bringing ours to life. Custom graphics IP for Samsung’s next high-end SoC, with Ray Tracing and Variable Rate Shading support.

Until today, Samsung has always used GPUs Mali designed by Arm on their high-end Exynos chipsets. Of course, the story is different for the company’s smartphones with Qualcomm Snapdragon SoCs, which use Adreno graphics chips.

Nvidia is currently in the process of acquiring Arm itself, which could result in serious changes in this market. The company tried to license its GeForce technologies to chip makers years ago, but so far it hasn’t had much success.

It is expected that if the transaction is approved, Nvidia will be able to offer its graphic chip intellectual properties as part of Arm’s licenses.
