smartphone market showed a record drop

According to the latest Strategy Analytics report, the smartphone market in February 2020 showed a record decline. Deliveries of devices around the world year-on-year fell by 38% – from 99.2 to 61.8 million in unit terms.

Strategy Analytics analyst Linda Sui noted that this has never happened before:

We started tracking the smartphone market back in 2003. This is the biggest drop in history.

This situation clearly illustrates the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the entire electronics market. However, while the February data was largely influenced by the spread of the virus only in China, in March the numbers may be even more pessimistic due to the situation with COVID-19 in Europe and the USA.

Despite the preliminary signs of recovery in China, we expect global smartphone shipments to remain low overall in March 2020, ”Yiven Wu, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, said.

The agency also notes that the decline in the smartphone market was influenced by both supply and demand. On the one hand, numerous factories were faced with quarantine and for some time could not produce anything, on the other hand, people in quarantine could not buy anything. According to Linda Sui, the drop occurred in all price ranges, and not just among expensive devices.
