Smart working, Profumo does the math: “30% of the offices will be vacated”

When the production activities and offices reopen, the smartworking node will come to a head and companies will have to establish how much of the emergency and how much structural the experience of these months bequeathed. If this is the question, the answer that comes from one of the most important Italian CEOs, Alessandro Profumo (Leonardo group), is clear. “I think that 30% of the space now occupied by offices will be freed up and obviously there will be strong consequences on the real estate market”.

Profumo spoke at the meeting in Rimini with the president of Istat, Gian Carlo Blangiardo and anticipated the ideas with which the Leonardo group intends to manage the discontinuity. Remote work should not only affect women, it can be modulated so that you stay at home maybe only two days a week, the company will have to provide the staff with all the necessary tools, you will have to pay attention to the enormous cybersecurity problems that the novelty entails. “What is certain is that all this radically changes the organizational structure of the offices”.

But beyond the spaces, companies will have to deal with what Leonardo’s CEO called “process change”, because it is far from obvious that remote work is intelligent. According to Profumo, the more strictly administrative tasks can be decentralized more easily, it is more complicated to have 10,000 engineers work remotely who are rightly used to daily contact, to checking the progress of work, to an interpersonal and creative exchange. Having said this, «in Leonardo no one has lost their job» and fixed-term contracts have been stabilized. The order book is going well and the group has not given up on investment programs that provide for the opening of 7 digital labs: the first in Genoa with the super calculator for the big data business.

Blangiardo’s position is more prudent, according to which “smartworking is a solution, one of the opportunities that are going to present itself, but we must not emphasize it because it also creates problems”. We should, therefore, find a mediation that “allows us to maintain the link with the workplace”. However, Istat is most worried about the tendency of resignation by the unemployed. «The data for March, April and May obviously marked a very strong fall, then already in May and then confirmed in June the recovery began – explained Blangiardo -. But it is worrying that the increase in the number of those who do not even offer themselves on the job market, discouraged people who say “after all, there are no opportunities” ».
