Slovak Prime Minister Igor Matovic Resigns After Failed Confidence Vote

Heger’s four-party coalition government fell in December after failing a confidence vote.

Since then, he headed the temporary cabinet, which was supposed to govern the country until the elections scheduled for September 30.

“I have asked the president to revoke my mandate,” Heger told reporters.

However, he promised to coordinate his decisions with President Zuzana Chaputova, with whom he is scheduled to meet later on Sunday.

“I will leave it to the president to try to lead Slovakia to free and democratic elections with a caretaker government,” Heger added.

The political crisis deepened this week when Agriculture Minister Samuel Vlcan resigned amid a scandal over €1.4 million in subsidies his company received.

On Friday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Rastislavs Kačers also announced his intention to leave the government, without mentioning the reasons.
