Science with new findings on hair loss: A team of US researchers has succeeded in developing an approach that could solve many people’s problems. The scientists at the “Oregon Health & Science University” have grown human skin cells that serve as a source for functioning hair follicles. This approach could combat hair loss in the future for many people. “More than a million people in Germany suffer from circular hair loss,” says the Federal Association for Second Hair Specialists, for example. The US researchers published their new findings in the specialist magazine Nature.
Part of the research is that a method has been identified that can bring hair to grow permanently. This is at an early stage, so not yet sufficiently researched. For their studies, the scientists used so-called “organoids”, cell cultures a few millimeters in size. These are used, among other things, in the research of organs other than the skin.
The “organoids” were manipulated in a very early phase of cell development. “It is now possible to make human hair for science without having to take it out of a human,” explains Benajmin Doodruff, one of the researchers involved. In this way, an almost unlimited treasure of human hair follicles has been revealed, he explains.
