Six thousand teachers are missing in the Czech Republic and it may be worse. The amendment is to bring experts to schools – ČT24 – Czech Television

For example, the primary school in Slaný has been struggling with a shortage of teachers for a long time. Director Věra Bělochová is currently inquiring of linguists and music teachers. “I am currently looking for three teachers. I have already negotiated something. If it doesn’t work out for me, then four, “says the school principal.

The lack of teachers is addressed in different ways. For example, Veronika Pastýříková has not yet graduated from the Faculty of Education, but she does not see this as a problem in practice. “I’m in my senior year of college, but I don’t feel it,” he says. Her colleague Tomáš Caska works at the second level, but he never studied teaching – he graduated from the University of Agriculture. Nevertheless, he decided to start and complete his education later.

The director of Bělochová explained to the Czech School Inspectorate the involvement of these cantors by proving that she was looking for new teachers intensively. She fulfilled the condition and did not break the rules.

According to surveys by the Ministry of Education, up to 6,000 teachers were missing from schools last September. It is estimated that up to eleven thousand may be missing in four years. In addition, the average age of teachers in the Czech Republic is high – 47 years.

“It is necessary to take into account the risk that some older teachers, who originally did not intend to leave school three or four months ago, will hasten their decision today,” warns Deputy Central School Inspector Ondřej Andrys.

Experts could also teach

The amendment to the law, which now lies in the lower house of parliament, is to help. According to her, university students in non-pedagogical fields could now also teach at primary and secondary schools and be immediately considered qualified if they promise to complete their education within three years.

“It is very important to open a secondary channel and, in addition to the so-called exception of practitioners today, also provide support to complete their education,” comments Minister of Education Robert Plaga (YES).

However, school unions do not agree with the amendment. According to them, a teacher is needed in primary schools. Experts – for example, physicists – they should teach only in secondary schools. “In our opinion, the ministry should have moved in a different direction. With the support of pedagogical faculties, with the support of students of pedagogy to teach to a greater extent, “states the chairman of the Czech-Moravian Trade Union of Education Workers František Dobšík.

The cabinet hopes that teachers will also receive a gradual increase in salaries for schools. According to the plan, they should increase by nine percent next year.
