Six Dead, 30 Injured in Illinois Dust Storm Pile-Up on Interstate 55 Highway

At least six people have died and more than 30 people have been injured, authorities said Monday after a pile-up caused by loss of visibility on a highway in the northern United States.

A terrible drama on an American highway this Monday. What US media describe as “a dust storm” caused a massive pile-up on an Illinois highway, killing at least six people.

More than thirty people were injured, indicate CNN and ABC, citing the authorities of this state in the north of the country. The people injured in this accident are aged, according to this source, from 2 to 80 years old.

The freeway, Interstate 55, was closed in both directions for about 20 miles, authorities said on Twitter.

“Zero Visibility”

According to CNNIllinois State Police Ryan Starrick says at least 40 vehicles were involved in the accident.

The authorities, quoted by American media, explain that the accident was caused by “strong winds which blew on the road from the dry earth of the neighboring fields, which reduced visibility to zero.”

The National Weather Service (NWS), American weather service, alerted on Twitter residents of the area, indicating that strong winds that can “reduce visibility” will persist until 8 p.m. local time (3:00 a.m. Paris time).
