Single-Engine Plane Makes Emergency Landing on Southern State Parkway
EAST FARMINGDALE, Long Island – June 2, 2024
A small, single-engine Piper PA-28 made an emergency landing on the eastbound lanes of the Southern State Parkway earlier today, causing a temporary shutdown of a section of the highway. The incident occurred at Exit 33 / Route 109 in East Farmingdale, Long Island, at approximately 11:40 a.m.
According to authorities, the plane had taken off from Republic Airport shortly before 10 a.m. and was forced to land on the highway due to engine failure. The pilot had reportedly notified the authorities of the engine failure and was attempting to return to the airport when the incident occurred.
Local witnesses reported seeing the Piper PA-28 flying at a low altitude over Suffolk County before it successfully landed on the busy highway. Fortunately, both occupants of the plane only sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at nearby hospitals. The identities of the occupants have not been disclosed.
The authorities closed the affected section of the Southern State Parkway to allow the safe removal of the plane. The incident will be thoroughly investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to determine the cause of the engine failure and the circumstances surrounding the emergency landing.
