Colombian-born pop star Shakira has to stand trial in a Spanish court on charges of tax evasion, according to Euro Weekly News.

For 44-year-old Shakira, the public prosecutor’s office in Spain accuses him of paying € 14.5 million in tax evasion. According to the Euro Weekly News, the prosecutor’s office found him guilty of a total of six crime episodes leading to 2012, 2013 and 2014. During this time, the singer did not pay taxes, although she is a Spanish tax resident and was obliged to do so.
In 2011, Shakira, a Colombian citizen, married Gerard Pique, a Spanish footballer, and the Barcelona Court of First Instance found evidence that she had lived in Spain with her husband for at least three years. However, the artist herself claims that during those years she lived in the Bahamas and visited Spain “sporadically”.
Under Spanish law, Mr Shakira was a Spanish tax resident. The law stipulates that if a person lives in this country for at least six months, he must pay taxes on his income, even if it is earned abroad.
By the way, footballer Pike also faced problems with the tax service in 2015, when he was fined 2.5 million euros that year.
According to Euro Weekly News, if Shakira does not settle tax payments and escape court, she faces even imprisonment.
